KUNST DER FREIHEIT is a show featuring Polish artists: painters, graphic artists, sculptors, video artists and filmmakers, who used their works to actively oppose the communist regime during the so called first Solidarity movement, the martial law until the 1980s, in some cases putting their lives at risk. This spirit of refusal, protest and involvement is still present in their art. So, it is not just an exhibition featuring only historic work but it will also present contemporary works.

New Expression is the Polish equivalent of the movement called “Neue Wilde” and has been developing in Poland since the beginning of the 1980s upon the birth of Solidarity movement (1980-1981) and during the martial law (1981-82), reaching the pinnacle of the development, which happened ca. 1987 and by 1989 it practically burned out. With regard to the formal aspect, it was equal and at the same time the functioning faction of the Transavantgarde that was celebrating artistic and commercial successes around the world in the 1980s, particularly in Germany.

KUNST DER FREIHEIT shows works aimed against the communist system and the authorities of the People’s Republic of Poland led by general Wojciech Jaruzelski.

Organizer is the Warsaw association: Kampania Artystyczna, partnered by the Polish Institute in Berlin, the project has been co-financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage of the Republic of Poland.
