For some time now, the Sonar Quartett has been in residence at the unique art space of KühlhausBerlin. In this inspiring setting, the four musicians draw inspiration and fresh impulses to craft their new works. In the new chamber music series „Hören Neue,” the quartet spotlights an evolving piece or a particular composer, framing the program with other, at times unheard, compositions. Furthermore, the quartet unveils its own new composition on each occasion, meticulously developed by the four musicians exclusively for the respective concert.
Since its establishment in 2006, the Berlin-based Sonar Quartett has consistently explored the fringes of classical music, giving birth to utopias and crafting sonic imprints through improvisation, whose echoes pave the way to their next notated opus. The four musicians see themselves as a composing string quartet that transcends presumed genre boundaries. They do so by incorporating their own bodies, electronic amplification, and distortion, or by transforming visual artworks into sound. With the Sonar Quartet, contemporary music transcends the auditory and visual realms, becoming a tactile experience for both the performers and the audience alike.

Seit einiger Zeit residiert das Sonar Quartett im einzigartigen Art-Space des KühlhausBerlin. In diesem inspirierenden Umfeld erhalten die vier Musiker einzigartige Inspirationen und neue Impulse für die Schaffung ihrer Werke. In der neuen Kammermusikreihe “Hören Neue” steht entweder ein im Entstehen begriffenes Werk oder ein bestimmter Komponist im Mittelpunkt, und das Quartett umrahmt das Programm mit anderen, teilweise noch nie gehörten Stücken. Zusätzlich präsentiert das Quartett an jedem Abend eine eigene neue Komposition, die speziell für das jeweilige Konzert von den vier Musikern entwickelt wurde.
Seit seiner Gründung 2006 tastet das Sonar Quartett immer wieder die Ränder der klassischen Musik ab, es erschafft Utopien und improvisiert Klangabdrücke, deren Nachhall schon den Weg zum nächsten notierten Werk nährt. Die vier in Berlin lebenden Musiker:innen verstehen sich als komponierendes Streichquartett, das weit über vermeintliche Genregrenzen hinausgreift, indem es sich auch der eigenen Körper, elektronischer Verstärkung und Verfremdung bedient oder auch bildkünstlerische Werke in Klang verwandelt. Neue Musik geht mit dem Sonar Quartett über das Hör- und Sichtbare hinaus, sie wird für die Spielenden und für die Zuhörer:innen gleichermaßen zu einem taktilen Erlebnis.
